USS S-4
(SS-109)

In dry dock at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, on 19 March 1928, after salvage. The water has been largely pumped out of the drydock, exposing the hole in S-4's starboard side (just forward of her 4"/50 deck gun) made when she collided with USCGC Paulding on 17 December 1927. The bodies of eight crew members are still in the submarine's Torpedo Room, where they were trapped when she sank after the collision.
Note diving support rafts alongside S-4 and salvage pontoon in the right foreground.
