USS Vandalia (1876-1889)
Ship's Marines and Sailors lined up for inspection on the gun
deck during the summer of 1886, while she was preparing for service
on the Pacific Station.
Photographed while Vandalia was in Dry Dock # 1 at the
New York Navy Yard, with Building # 20 in the background. View
looks forward from the quarterdeck.
Note white tropical trousers and pith helmets worn by officers
and Marines. Marines are armed with "trap-door" Springfield
rifles, with bayonets fixed. Sailors are armed with cutlasses.
Photographer was probably E.H. Hart, 1162 Broadway, New York
City.
