"Capture of the U.S. Mail Steamer 'Ariel,' off the East End of Cuba, by the Privateer 'Alabama,' December 7th 1862"


Line engraving, from a sketch by R.C. Thomas, published in "The Soldier in Our Civil War", volume II, page 33, depicting CSS Alabama capturing the steamer Ariel with hundreds of passengers on board, including about 150 U.S. Marines.
Ariel, en route from the U.S. to Panama with mail and passengers en bound for California, was ransomed and released, and her military passengers were paroled.
