S.S. Great Eastern (British Steamship, 1859)
Cartoon from a contemporary publication, humorously speculating
on possible future shipbuilding developments, inspired by the
then-huge size of the Great Eastern.
This cartoon probably dates from the same time as the first attempts
to lay a trans-Atlantic telegraph cable, in 1857-1858. In 1866
Great Eastern was herself used to lay the first successful
cable across the Atlantic.
