Dust Storm off the African Coast
Photograph taken from the bridge of USS Decatur (Destroyer
# 5) by Machinist's Mate May, during the First Torpedo Flotilla's
transit of the Mediterranean Sea, en route to the Philippines
by way of the Suez Canal, circa late 1903 or early 1904. The
air was filled with red dust from the desert.
USS Dale (Destroyer # 4) is in the foreground, with USS
Chauncey (Destroyer # 3) in the left distance.
