Photo #: NH 62370 Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, Chief of Naval Operations Speaking during ceremonies commemorating the first anniversary of Japan's formal surrender, on board USS Missouri (BB-63), at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, 2 September 1946. The plaque marking the surrender site is inset into the ship's deck, immediately in front of the lectern. Rear Admiral M.L. Deyo, Commander, First Naval District, is seated just to the left of FAdm. Nimitz, and there are many members of veterans' organizations present. Note microphones for NBC and WBZ radio stations, and two-man rowing shell in the water alongside.
