Commander James H. Ward, USN (1806-1861)
Photograph taken circa the late 1850s or early 1860s.
Commander Ward, who lost his life on 27 June 1861 while commanding
USS Thomas Freeborn in action at Mathias Point, Virginia,
was the first U.S. Navy officer killed in action during the Civil
War.
