USS Cumberland sunk by CSS Virginia (ex-USS
Merrimack), 8 March 1862
Colored lithograph by Currier and Ives, 1862, entitled "The
Sinking of the 'Cumberland' by the Iron Clad 'Merrimac', off
Newport News, Va., March 8th 1862. 'Cumberland' went down with
all her Flags flying: -- destroyed, but not conquered. Her gallant
Commander Lieut. Morris calling to his crew 'Given them a Broadside
boys, as she goes'."
