"Jap Pillbox Smashed by Iwo Bombardment"
"When advancing Marines reached this Japanese pill box on Iwo Jima, they found it in this condition, apparently demolished by the combined gunfire of U.S. Navy warships offshore and aerial bombardment. This picture was made during the week following the landing on Iwo on February 19th." Quoted from the original picture caption released for publication on 28 February 1945 by Commander in Chief, Pacific/Pacific Ocean Area.

The original photograph came from the illustrations package for Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's "History of United States Naval Operations in World War II", volume XIV: "Victory in the Pacific".
