Sheet Music of the "Stars & Stripes Forever"

(page 2)

Manuscript piano copy of an original draft of John Philip Sousa's march, recovered from USS California (BB-44) while she was being salvaged at Pearl Harbor in 1942.
This score had been obtained by Mr. L.B. Luchenbach from Harold Heard, a former trombonist with the Sousa band. Both were aboard California when she was sunk as a result of the 7 December 1941 Japanese air raid. Luchenbach got off the ship, but the music didn't. When the ship was raised, he went aboard and recovered it.

Donation of Mr. L.B. Luchenbach, 1971.
