Near-miss bomb damage to the ship's port quarter, received during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons on 24 August 1942. Note degaussing cables torn from their mountings, just below the deck edge, and the dished-in hull plating at and below the waterline.
Photographed in drydock at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard on 10 September 1942.
