USS Toledo (CA-133)

"Being Prepared for the unexpected is expected of Navy corpsmen, such as those aboard the USS Toledo (CA-133). An unexpected case came aboard recently during heavy shelling operations off the North Korean coast, when a little oriental sparrow, obviously quite ill, came to rest on the heavy cruiser's open bridge. Without any question as to its political sentiments, corpsmen Leland B. Whitney, HM3, (right) ... and Bobby Pete West, SN, ... administered first aid - in the form of food and warmth - and released the patient. The blasting of Communist gun emplacements went on as before."
Photograph and caption were released by Commander Naval Forces, Far East, under date of 28 November 1952.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the "All Hands" collection at the Naval Historical Center.
