"WAVES, Nurses, 'Go Below""

"The submarine branch of the U.S. Navy is strictly marked 'Men Only', but there is a group of women in uniform who now have some idea of just what 'sub duty' entails. The group is comprised of a number of WAVES who visited the sub base at New London, Conn., and the Navy nurses who are assigned to duty there. The WAVES went through parts of the training routine for the experience, but the nurses underwent the drill as a matter of business, in order to aid them in treating casualties."
"The Pressure is on -- Going through parts of the regular routine undergone by students at the New London sub base, visiting WAVES spend some minutes in the pressure tank." Quoted from the original caption released with this photograph on 14 September 1943.
