WAVES' physical training, circa 1944

"Though they don't serve aboard ships, WAVES must master the intricacies of the 'escape hatch' to develope coordination and endurance during training. These girls race through the hatch at Miami, Florida."
Quoted from the original caption released with this photograph effective 30 July 1944. The release included this covering caption:
"WAVES celebrate Second 'Birthday' on July 30. The second anniversary of the founding of the Women's Reserve, U.S. Naval Reserve, finds more than 70,000 WAVES on duty all over the nation, performing duties formerly handled by men. As a result, thousands of Navy men have been freed to serve on the fighting fronts.
