USNS Josiah Willard Gibbs (T-AGOR-1)
Underbody aft showing the auxiliary propeller added during her
conversion to a research ship.
This propeller, which resembled an internally-mounted outboard
motor, could be rotated through 180 degrees and enabled the ship
to maneuver precisely at speeds from dead slow to four knots.
It was powered by a 200 horsepower diesel. Note the wrench in
use on the port main propeller.
