Complete view of the above-decks components of the ship's deep-sea
winch, probably shown just following installation in around late
1959.
This, the largest and heaviest deep-sea winch used up to this
time by the U.S. for oceanographic research, could carry up to
40,000 feet of wire rope in storage reels below decks and could
handle a 40,000 pound maximum load.
