The "O" frame on the ship's stern through which passed
the cable from the ship's deep-sea winch, probably shown just
following installation in around late 1959.
The ship's deep-sea winch, the largest and heaviest used up to
this time by the U.S. for oceanographic research, could carry
up to 40,000 feet of wire rope in storage reels below decks and
handle a 40,000 pound maximum load.
