USS Providence (CL-82)

With USS Chewaucan (AOG-50) coming alongside at Gibraltar, circa late September 1948, as seen from USS Albany (CA-123). Sixth Task Fleet destroyers are moored in the right distance.
Photo released for publication 4 October 1948. It was taken as Albany relieved USS Fargo (CL-106) as flagship of the Sixth Task Fleet, operating in the Mediterranean Sea. Two other cruisers and ten destroyers were among the units relieved in line with Navy policy of rotating ships on duty in the Mediterranean approximately every four months. The presence of a number of British Navy ships, among them the battleship Vanguard, resulted in the largest concentration of U.S. and British ships at Gibraltar since World War II.
