USS Atlanta (IX-304)


Stress measuring device mounted on one of Atlanta's masts, photographed as she was completing conversion to a weapons effects test ship at the Hunters' Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, California, circa October 1964.
The original picture caption, released by 12th Naval District Office of Public Information, reads: "Several hundred of the measuring devices are placed throughout the ship. They are calibrated to measure the amount of stress the blasts impose on the ship and what, if any, damage was done."
