At the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, for a 32-week repair and overhaul period. The ship was relieved as flagship for Commander Second Fleet on 12 January 1966 and entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 17 January.
The original photograph was received by "All Hands" magazine on 1 February 1966.
