Chaplain John L. Lenhart, USN


A member of the Chaplain Corps from 1847 until 1862, he was the first U.S. Navy Chaplain to lose his life in battle. Chaplain Lenhart was killed in action during the 8 March 1862 action in Hampton Roads, Virginia, between USS Cumberland and CSS Virginia.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 24.
