Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Rufus G. Herring, USNR
Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal presents the Medal of Honor
to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Herring on 5 September 1945 at Washington
D.C. He received the award for "conspicuous gallantry and
intrepidity at the risk of his life" while in command of
USS LCI(G)-449 during the pre-invasion attack on Iwo Jima,
17 February 1945.

Mrs. Susan Geddie Herring (Lt. Herring's mother),
Mrs. L. Geddie (his aunt),
and Mr. L. Geddie (his uncle).
