Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


First waves of the assault force, embarked in LVTs, head for the Iwo Jima beach, 19 February 1945.
Landing Craft, Support (LCS) are positioned near shore shore, providing close-in fire support. Also providing gunfire support, nearer to the camera, are two destroyers and (at right) the battleship Tennessee (BB-43). Mount Suribachi is in the upper left.
