Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


Waves of amphibious tractors (LVTs) and landing craft head for the landing beaches, shortly before "H-Hour" during the invasion of Iwo Jima, 19 February 1945.
The island, with Mount Suribachi at left, is shrouded in smoke from the continuing pre-landing bombardment. USS Tennessee (BB-43) is in the left center, just in front of of the leading wave of LVTs.
