Iwo Jima Landings, 19 February 1945

"Red Stands for Iwo Jima." ... "High-ranking Navy officers check time and conditions as the moment draws close upon H-Hour off Iwo Jima. In the background are a few of the hundreds of Navy landing craft soon to hurtle at breakneck pace towards the objective." Quoted from the original photo caption, released on 24 May 1945.
This is a still image taken from the Navy, Marine and Coast Guard motion picture "To the Shores of Iwo Jima".
Note that most of the landing craft seen are, in fact, Marine Corps amphibious tractors (LVT).

The original print came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the collections of the Naval Historical Center.
