Iwo Jima Landings, 19 February 1945


The first waves of amphibious tractors (LVT) near the assault landing beaches on Iwo Jima, a few minutes before "H-Hour" on 19 February 1945. Providing close-in gunfire support are two Fletcher class destroyers (lower left and lower center) and the battleship Tennessee (BB-43), in the lower right.

The original print came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.
