Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
"This is a closeup view of Mount Suribachi, on the southern
tip of Iwo Jima, a Japanese strong point where American Marines
were meeting stiff opposition from the Nipponese. This photo
was made by Lieut. L.S. Willis, USNR, ... Feb. 20." Quoted
from the original photo caption, released by Commander-in-Chief,
Pacific/Pacific Ocean Areas on 21 February 1945.
Note the zig-zag path up the interior of Suribachi's crater (center).
This area was still occupied by the Japanese at the time this
photograph was taken.
