Iwo Jima Operation, 1945

"A U.S. Navy hospital ship lies just outside the fighting invasion fleet off Iwo Jima, ready to receive and evacuate casulaties in the bitter battle with the Japanese on the island. This photo was made by Lieut. L.S. Willis, USNR, ... February 20." Quoted from the original photo caption, released by Commander-in-Chief, Pacific/Pacific Ocean Areas on 21 February 1945.
The hospital ship (at the bottom center) is USS Samaritan (AH-10). In the background are several LSTs, LSMs, LCI(L) types and PCs, with large numbers of landing craft maneuvering in their vicinity.
