Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


"Digging in on Iwo Jima Beach Head -- Marines dig in utilizing every available shelter to escape the Jap fire, just after they were landed from Navy and Coast Guard landing craft." Quoted from the original photo caption, released on 22 February 1945.
Note bulldozer and mobile crane. A load of pierced steel planking, still strapped together, is behind the Marines sheltering in the right center. The wrecked ship in the background is a small Japanese steamer.
