Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
"Marines Dug In at Iwo Jima. American Marines who stormed
ashore at the Japanese stronghold of Iow Jima, take shelter in
foxholes and shell craters halfway across the island a few hundred
yards from the front lines February 20, the day after landing.
An Amtrac is seen moving along the road. An American gun position
has been set up (top of picture), while at right another gun
position is being established. This airview was made by Lt. L.S.
Willis, USNR." Quoted from the original photo caption, released
by Commander-in-Chief, Pacific/Pacific Ocean Areas on 21 February
1945.
Note camouflage netting covering positions in the center of the
view and in the lower left. Sandbags have been extensively used
around the field gun positions and in other places.
