Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
"Battle -- A Marine 37mm gun firing on Japanese positions
on the slopes of Mt. Suribachi, the volcano on the southern tip
of Iwo Jima, where the enemy kept up constant fire on the Marines
..." (quoted from the original caption released with this
photograph in 1945).
Photographed by Cornelius on 21 February 1945.
Note the irregular edge at the top of the gun's shield, apparently
a camouflage measure, small puff of smoke on Suribachi's lower
slope (center) from the impact of this gun's shell, 37mm ammunition
and M1 ("Garand") rifle in the foreground, and equipment
on the landing beach at left.
Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections
of the Naval Historical Center.
