Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


"Stars and Stripes Fly over Iwo Jima --- Marines can be seen about the base of the staff on which they raised the American flag over Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on 23 February (ELD). Volcano is in foreground while flag stands out against the blue Pacific. A large Jap cave can be discerned part way down the slope. Photo made from a U.S. Navy Liberator 24 February 1945. Film was flown to Guam for processing, and radiophotoed to San Francisco by Navy Radio." (quoted from the original caption released with this photograph on 24 February 1945).
Note the battleship steaming by in the center distance.

The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.
