Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


Sitting by the flag raised atop Mount Suribachi on 23 February 1945, a U.S. Marine looks out over Iwo Jima's eastern landing beaches.

The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.
