Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
"Not a Dummy Run --- These Marines of the Fifth Division
never saw as much 'brass' in their entire time in 'boot camp'
as they have around their machine gun on Iwo Jima. The battle
of Suribachi wasn't a 'dummy run' and they didn't have to pick
up their 'brass' as the battle was 'for keeps'." (quoted
from the original caption released with this photograph on 2
March 1945).
Photographed by Sergeant L.R. Burmeister, USMC, on 22 February
1945 as the Marines were assaulting Mount Suribachi, which is
partially visible in the right background.
Note the .30 caliber Browning water-cooled machine gun, "Jerry"
can containing water, and the large quantity of expended ammunition
casings and (presumably empty) ammo cans.
The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's
World War II history project working files. It was provided to
Morison by E.J. Long.
Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections
of the Naval Historical Center.
