Iwo Jima Operation, 1945

"Marines under fire -- scene of ridge 362." (quoted from the original 1945 vintage caption). This is presumably one of three hills designated "362" (-A, -B and -C) in the northern part of Iwo Jima.
Taken by Private Bob Campbell, the photograph shows one Marine moving up with ammunition cans while another appears to be taking a cigarette break.
Note the airplane in the center distance.

The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files.

Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections of the Naval Historical Center.
