Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


"Advance on the Double -- Burdened with heavy packs and equipment, Marine Communicators dash for cover during the inland drive from the Iwo Beachhead." (quoted from the original 1945 vintage caption).
Taken by Newcomb, the photograph shows one Marine moving forward in center, carrying a Winchester M1912 shotgun. The Marine in the foreground is holding an M1 Carbine with a grenade launcher attachment. Mount Suribachi is in the left distance.

The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files.
