Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


"Major Richard Fogan (sic, actually Fagan), now C.O. of Third Bn., 26th Marines, since death of Lieutenant Colonel (Tom M.) Trotti, examines aerial photos through stereoscope, assisted by Captain Pierson, who is Bn.-3 officer since death of Major (William R.) Day." (quoted, with given names added in parentheses, from the original 1945 vintage photo caption).

LtCol. Trotti and Major Day (the 26th Marines' operations officer) were killed by the same mortar shell during the morning of 22 February 1945, while their regiment was attacking Japanese positions near Iwo Jima's Airfield Number Two.
