Peleliu Invasion, September 1944
"Hot Stuff --- Using a flame throwing amphibious tractor,
Marines shoot a tongue of fire at enemy strong points in a cave-infested
hillside on Peleliu. Do-or-die Japanese on Iwo Jima are waging
a bloody battle from similar positions which have to be eliminated
by the use of high explosives, flamethrowers, hand grenades or
hand-to-hand fighting." (quoted from the original photo
caption released circa February 1945. An accompanying editor's
note states: "This series of pictures shows cave positions
used by the enemy in past operations, similar to Jap pockets
of resistance now being encountered by Marines on Iwo Jima".
Photographed by Private Robert A. Bailey.
The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's
World War II history project working files.
Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections
