Iwo Jima Operation, 1945


"Last Stand --- A die-hard Jap on Iwo Jima gets a blast of liquid flame. Fifth Marine Division riflemen surround the dug-out ready to pour covering fire into the opening. The flame-thrower, supported by covering rifle fire, has been a basic weapon in the cave to cave battle on the volcanic rock." (quoted from the original photo caption released 26 February 1945.)
