Smoke Screen
Possibly taken during the Iwo Jima or Okinawa operations
in 1945. The smoke appears to be employed to conceal landing
craft and other vessels. An LCS is in the left center, and a
destroyer is at the far left. Several other landing craft are
present, in the center and right. Land is visible in the distance.
Original 35mm Kodachrome transparency, photographed by Lieutenant
Howard W. Whalen, USNR, Boat Group Commander, USS Sanborn
(APA-193).
Collection of Lieutenant Commander Howard W. Whalen, USNR. Donated
by Mrs. Nadine Whalen, 1997.
