Iwo Jima Operation, February-March 1945

"Air Mail Special --- Jubilant Marines gather parapacks of mail dropped by a transport plane for Leatherneck troops on the American-held portion of Iwo Jima. Large quantities of blood plasma was (sic) delivered in a similar 'raid'." (quoted from the original 1945 vintage photo caption).
Photographed by Technical Sergeant H. Neil Gillespie.
This view appears to look toward the high ground of northern Iwo Jima, where fighting was intense in late February and March 1945.

The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.

Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections of the Naval Historical Center.
