U.S. Naval Gun Factory, Washington Navy Yard, District of
Columbia
Panoramic photograph of the Gun Factory's Yeoman (F) force, posed
in front of the north end of the Building 57, March 1919.
Seated in the center of the front row are Captain Arthur L. Willard,
Captain Martin E. Trench and an unidentified Lieutenant.
Seated in the front row, fifth from left (marked by a small arrow),
is Yeoman Second Class Charlotte Louise Berry.
Note the two banners behind the group, one featuring the Naval
Gun Factory emblem and the other its seal, and the sign partially
hidden by the right-most banner, reading "Accounting ...
Department ... 2nd Floor".
Also note the variety of uniform hats worn by these Yeomen (F),
with broad-brimmed felt and straw hats predominating, most with
flat crowns, but some with rounded crowns. A few of these hats
have significantly broader brims than the others. Two or three
"Yeomanettes" (near the rear of the group, below the
left-most banner) are wearing men's "flat hats", at
least one reshaped in beret style. The most common hat ribbons
read "U.S. Navy", but several "U.S. Naval Reserve"
ribbons are present, along at least one "U.S. Naval Reserve
Force" (worn by YN2 Berry) and a few "Receiving Ship
at Washington". Chief Petty Officers' cap badges are worn
both at a slant and vertical.
