Halftone reproduction of a photograph, copied from the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 154.
Harold W. Bauer was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for "extraordinary heroism and conspicuous courage" from 10 May to 14 November 1942, mainly while defending Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, as Squadron Commander, Marine Fighting Squadron Two Hundred Twelve (VMF-212). During this time, he downed 11 Japanese enemy aircraft before being forced to ditch his plane on 14 November. Subsequent rescue efforts were unsuccessful.
