Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Sign erected on 18 February 1964 proclaims the base's liberation from the Cuban Government water supply system, severed on 17 February after Rear Admiral John D. Bulkeley ordered the pipes to the cut and sealed. This was done in retaliation after Fidel Castro accused the Guantanamo Base of "stealing" water from the Yateras Water Plant. The Cuban Government stopped supplying water to the base on 6 February, and water was then sent in by ship from the United States until completion of a desalinization plant in July 1966.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the Naval Historical Center.
