Henry A. Courtney, Jr., was posthumously awarded the Medal of
Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" while
serving as Executive Officer of the Second Battalion, Twenty-Second
Marines, Sixth Marine Division during combat action on Okinawa
during the night of 14-15 May 1945. Determined to thwart a possible
Japanese counterattack on Sugar Loaf Hill, he led his men in
a successful assault on enemy positions, holding the newly-captured
ground until he was mortally wounded by a hostile mortar burst.
