Receives a Gold Star in lieu of his fourth Distinguished Service Medal, in ceremonies on board USS Missouri (BB-63) at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, 28 September 1945. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who presented the medal, is reading the citation on the same spot where the Japanese surrender was signed twenty-six days earlier.
