"12-Inch Gun Cruiser Study, CA2F"
(with hull sections for Schemes CA2E & F, G, H & I)
Preliminary design plan prepared for the General Board as part
of the process leading to the Alaska class (CB1-6) large
cruiser design.
This plan, dated 19 June 1940, is for a ship (CA2F) of 24,700
tons standard displacement and 28,300 tons trial displacement,
with a main battery of seven 12"/50 guns, a secondary battery
of twelve 5"/38 guns, and a 150,000 horsepower powerplant
for a speed of 33 knots. Ship's dimensions are: waterline length
750'; beam 84'; draft 29'.
Scale of the original plan and side elevation drawings is 1/32"
= 1'.
The hull sections (original scale 1/16" = 1') represent
anti-torpedo side protection alternatives, resulting in differing
hull sizes, main batteries, powerplants, speeds and other features:
CA2E (standard displacement 24,100 tons, 740' length, and six
12" guns. Otherwise as CA2F) & CA2F with double bottom extending
upward to a single inboard bulkhead;
CA2G with triple bottom extending upward to two inboard bulkheads
(standard displacement 27,500 tons, 790' length, 86' beam, 30'
draft, and eight 12" guns); and
CA2H & CA2I with triple bottom and four inboard bulkheads, plus
improved armor protection. CA2H would have had a 27,500 ton standard
displacement, 790' length, 87' beam, 29' draft, 100,000 HP powerplant
for 30.5 knots, and nine 12" guns. CA2I would have been
similar, but with 86' beam, 120,000 HP for 31.5 knots, and seven
12" guns.
The original plan is in the 1939-1944 "Spring Styles Book"
held by the Naval Historical Center.
