"CV-D - Aircraft Carrier"
Preliminary design plan prepared for the General Board during
the process that led to the armored flight deck Midway
(CVB-41) class.
This plan, dated 12 July 1941, depicts a 28,000-ton (standard
displacement) 788-foot (between perpendiculars) ship with 1.5-inch
flight deck armor and all aircraft elevators on the port side.
Gun battery contains twelve 5"/38 dual-purpose guns (four
twin mounts and four singles).
This ship, whose displacement approximated that of the Essex
(CV-9) class, was too small to operate a full-sized air group.
Scale of the original drawings is 1/32" = 1'.
The original plan is in the 1939-1944 "Spring Styles Book"
held by the Naval Historical Center.
