"20 Knot Flightdeck Oiler - Preliminary Study"

Preliminary design plan prepared for the General Board as part of a study of high speed oilers.
This drawing, dated 21 March 1942, is for a 30,000-ton (displacement) ship with a length (between perpendiculars) of 600 feet. It is similar to an escort aircraft carrier (CVE), though rather larger and with a relatively small hangar. Compared to the 20-knot oiler seen in Photo # S-511-52, it has the same oil cargo capacity (13,000 tons) and horsepower (25,000), with bunker oil compartments arranged along the sides to protect machinery spaces of very different configuration.
Scale of the original drawing is 1/32" = 1'.

The original plan is in the 1939-1944 "Spring Styles Book" held by the Naval Historical Center.
