Photo #: S-584-010 "Proposed B. S. [Battleships] Nos. 38 & 39" ... Scheme "G" ... February 14, 1912 Preliminary design plan for Fiscal Year 1913 battleships. This design represented an enlarged version of the preceding Nevada (Battleship # 36) class (see Photo # S-584-009), modified to meet characteristics issued by the Navy’s General Board on 9 June 1911. The characteristics included two additional 14-inch guns and more underwater armor to enhance protection against mines, torpedoes, and plunging shell fire. This plan shows a ship 55 feet longer and 3,800 tons larger than Nevada that fully met the Board’s goals. Pennsylvania (Battleship # 38) was built to a generally similar design (see Photo # S-584-041). This plan provides twelve 14-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 21 knots in a ship 630 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 93 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 31,300 tons. Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
